Lewis Carroll is the pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. He was born in 1832 and is remembered as the author of the most famous children´s book ever written. He was a brillant mathematician at Oxford, where he spent his entire career, and also a renowned photographer of children. One day in 1862, he took a party of girls out on a boating trip with a friend and entertained them by making up a story which he called `Alice´s Adventures Underground`, This was the basis for the book Alice´s Adventures in Wonderland which first appeared in 1865. Dodgson´s fame as a writer led him to an audience with Queen Victoria, who politely asked him for a copy of his next book. Imagine her surprise when, instead of a children´s book, he sent her dull mathematics textbook intead!. Nevertheless there was a sequel, Through the Looking-glass, which was published in 1871.These two books marked a turning-point in children´s literature, because adults and children were captivated by their fun and wit;until then children´s book had been strictly instructive. Lewis Carrol died in Oxford in 1898.
